Having an active social media presence is a great way for leaders to grow their business. It helps you establish your personal brand and authority, as well as reach a wider audience of potential customers. However, it also requires you to expend time and energy, which can be especially draining for an introverted or introspective business owner.

Fortunately, you can use your introspection to your advantage while engaging on social media. Below, 10 Young Entrepreneur Council members share their best tips for introverted leaders who want to stay active on social media without burning out.

1. Share Posts You Enjoy

If you’re an introvert, there’s a good chance that you’re still consuming content just as regularly as an extrovert. Make sure you share the cool posts, videos and statistics you read with your audience to help build a connection and common ground. Write your own social media posts sparingly. Consumers will listen carefully when it’s rare to see you speak up beyond your shared posts, which can help boost engagement and website traffic. – Chris Christoff, MonsterInsights 

2. Prepare And Schedule Content In Advance 

One way to be active consistently on social media is to prepare a lot of content in advance and then schedule when it should be published. You can use a social media management tool to schedule publication over the next few days and weeks. Once this is done, all a person has to do is check their social media when they are able to and see the response. Being introverted has advantages, as one creates more space for thought and creativity. 3. Talk To Your Followers Privately 

There’s one thing that people forget in social media: the opportunity to engage with followers privately. With direct customer engagement, you get ideas of what they think about your brand and at the same time, you have the chance to convey your message to everyone. You don’t have to do the task yourself—bots and your team can do it for you, but learn to engage once in a while. You’ll learn something from someone for sure. 4. Use Written Content To Your Advantage 

Introverts have a natural tendency to think before they speak, which means they have a natural advantage on social media where so much of the content is done through writing. You can take the time to make your post or your comment sound exactly right. In most cases, you can make small edits even after you’ve posted your thoughts. The other thing most introverts have going for them is a natural curiosity to dig in and learn more. If you’re an introvert, ask a lot of questions on social media. Make it your goal to get conversations started rather than try to impress people with your wit or your intelligence. 5. Encourage User-Generated Content 

As an introverted business leader, actively posting and engaging with followers on social media may not be something you particularly enjoy, but a strong online presence is a must in the digital era. Let your customers take over by encouraging user-generated content. This strategy has two-fold benefits for you: it takes the bulk of content creation away from you and it also results in your customers spreading positive word of mouth. This organically increases your reach and results in social proof. Incentivize your customers to talk about your brand and mention it on social media by resharing their content on your own service pages. 6. Make Your Introversion Part Of Your Brand 

It is estimated that up to 40% of the population are introverts. This means that as an introverted business owner, you have a huge potential audience who are similar in mindset to you. This audience are likely very used to being bombarded with excessive, “loud” social media posts from extroverted business owners. This increases the value of genuine, carefully-considered social media posts for everyone, but also for your fellow introverts. Use your experience as an introvert and be honest while sharing and creating thought leadership content which speaks to you. It’s not only extroverted business owners who can succeed and deliver value, and other business-minded introverts on social media will respond well to you highlighting that. 7. Keep The Focus On Business 

Social media, being a social phenomenon by definition, can be uncomfortable at times for those who are more introverted or value their privacy. In modern business, however, it’s become an essential tool for networking, marketing and recruiting. Businesses that don’t have at least some social media presence can run the risk of falling behind those that do. When using social media as a business leader, there’s no need to put the focus on yourself. Keep posts and discussions about your business’ products, value-adds and any major industry news or blog about a topic you have some expertise in. 8. Humanize Yourself 

Share what you feel comfortable sharing. You don’t have to put your entire life on social media, but share enough where your followers can get to know your human side. 9. Hire A Social Media Team 

If you’re an introvert, you might want to consider hiring a social media marketing team to take over responsibility for your business account. If you want to use this to your advantage, have your team mark each post they write with their name to build rapport with your audience. People will begin to discover their favorite member of your team and are more likely to engage with those posts. Additionally, you can get on the account and write a post when there’s an update or message you want to pass on to your followers. – John Turner, SeedProd LLC 

10. Do It Your Way 

I don’t think there’s a problem with somebody being introverted or extroverted when it comes to running a business, and there’s definitely no issues with introverted leaders running their social media accounts. Some of the best leaders I know are introverts, and this characteristic only makes them better at what they do. Introverts are attentive to details, thinking before they act and rarely making any impulsive choices. Social media is a perfect environment for introverts. You don’t have to overshare or capture your every step in Instagram Stories. You don’t have to go live if you don’t want to. Just do it your own way.
